Start Goals vs Stop Goals: How To Achive More

How To Achieve More: Start Goals vs Stop Goals

⏱️ 2 min read

When people think about change, they usually think about what needs to stop.

▸ Stop eating junk.
▸ Stop scrolling.
▸ Stop overthinking.

These are known as stop goals — they focus on stopping or avoiding certain behaviours. But here’s the catch: it’s hard to replace something with nothing. Telling yourself not to do something doesn’t always give your brain a clear alternative.

That’s where start goals come in.

Instead of focusing on what you’re trying to avoid, focus on what you want to do instead.

▸ Start eating more whole foods.
▸ Start using a timer for work blocks.
▸ Start practicing kind self-talk.

These goals help create new habits, routines, and actions. They give you a direction to move towards, not just a behaviour to resist.

Because growth isn’t just about cutting back. It’s about building forward.
